about

“Zenophilia” against every wall
Zeno De Rossi recalls the past and reflects on the future
The drummer leads a trio featuring Piero Bittolo Bon on sax and Filippo Vignato on trombone in his new album, co-produced by Auand Records and El Gallo Rojo

Like gradually developing thoughts that take unpredictable directions and often come full circle, the music in Zenophilia is a reflection on today’s world, one that can be playful and deep, laid-back and accurate.

The new trio led by Italian drummer Zeno De Rossi, with Piero Bittolo Bon (alto sax, bass flute) and Filippo Vignato (trombone), is definitely not an ordinary band. And the music in the album mirrors that: it’s essential to the point of being risky, and therefore ready to take up every spark or connection, and turn it into a new path to cover together. In this approach lies the very sense of this act: «The project name is a pun – De Rossi says – that mixes my name with the world xenophilia, meaning the attraction towards foreign people and cultures. The resurgence of the nationalist movements is scary. I believe we need to feel empathy for other people’s lives and experiences, rather than build walls to protect us».

Following intertwining routes that keep on splitting and running after each other, Bittolo Bon and Vignato mutually open new doors, and De Rossi’s non-stop rhythmic patterns come to life. In its own way, the album is a recap of career spanning 20 years: among the 12 tracks, mostly penned by the leader, lie tunes composed during the most important artistic experiences for De Rossi. Unpublished works are also included: Baboo, dedicated to his son and specifically conceived for this trio, is based on a rhythmic idea that overflows with ancestral energy. The same kind of force, loaded with a happy-go-lucky spirit, is back on the opening track, I’ve Never Been On It Before. On the opposite side of the sound spectrum, the solemn pace and smooth drumming of Red Bird, along with the old-time blues attitude of Henry Zeno.

Among the non original material, the lively and turbulent rendition of Ornette Coleman’s Feet Music, and the Taxi Driver charming theme, made even more disturbed and mysterious by Bittolo Bon’s sax.

The album, co-produced by Auand Records and El Gallo Rojo, is the third collaboration between the label from Puglia and the collective, showing once again their will to bet on the most innovative side of the Italian music scene.
